New "Make me NVZ Legal" Package (March 2010)

As you know the new NVZ’s have very much arrived. In response we have put together a new package of advice and record keeping  called “Make me NVZ Legal”.  The package will provide you with all the required advice and paperwork in one place and make the necessary ongoing updates as easy as possible.   A consultant will come out to your farm, discuss how the rules impact on your business and put together a package of records that not only meet NVZ requirements but also help you make best use of manures and as a consequence save money.

British Grassland Society Nutrient Wise Demos (6th October 2009)

Creedy Associates is managing a series of grassland plots funded by the British Grassland Society. In mid July field scale plots involving a number of methods establishing clover into an existing sward were established and in August field scale plots were established to demonstrate the potential of manures to provide crop nutrients.

Last week we hosted the first farmer events at the site which was a great success. A summary of the information at the events can be downloaded from the links below.

Visitors will be invited to look at the site again in the spring in small groups, mainly through local grassland societies. If you would like to visit the plots please contact the British Grassland Society office. British Grassland Society Contact Details

NVZ Derogation on Livestock Manure N Farm Limit Approved

The EC Nitrates Committee has agreed the UK governments application to raise the livestock manure N farm limit from 170kgN/ha/yr to 250kgN/ha/yr for livestock manure deposited by grazing livestock in NVZ's, therefore increasing farms maximum stocking rate. However, the following conditions are attached:

  • Only farms with at least 80% of their agricultural area in grass can apply.
  • Individual farmers must apply annually for the derogation.
  • Livestock manure may not be applied to grassland that is to be cultivated in the autumn.
  • Temporary grassland on sandy soils must be cultivated only in spring.
  • Ploughed grass must be followed by a crop with a high nitrogen requirement.
  • Leguminous crops must not be included in the rotation. This will not apply to clover in grassland with less than 50% clover or other legumes that are under-sown with grass.
  • There must be a phosphorus fertiliser plan for each field.
  • Each farm applying must have results for soil N and P analysis with sampling done at least ever four years (it is not likely that soil N testing will be enforced).
